We’ve been told our whole lives that sunscreen is the most important thing we can use to prevent skin cancer. As someone who has been diagnosed with skin cancer – a squamous cell carcinoma on my abdomen – I can say with utmost certainty that this is true! When I was young, I thought that my naturally dark skin was invincible, so I would bake in the Florida sun with tanning oils and think nothing of it. Now that I’m 43, I’ve had to learn the hard way that there is no such thing as a “safe tan.”
Of course, avoiding the sun altogether is virtually impossible. To maintain healthy, youthful skin—particularly during the summer months—it’s important to take preventative measures. This means changing up our skin care regimen!
Medical-grade sunscreen is by far the most effective anti-aging product on the market. When it is paired with the right skincare products, anyone can fight free-radical damage and keep their skin looking beautiful for years to come!
Below are some of my favorite products to use during the summer:
Colorescience Sunforgettable Sunscreen is a broad spectrum, brush-on powder sunscreen that makes protecting your skin from UVA/UVB rays easy with sheer, natural-looking coverage. This product is easy to use and reapply, and allows you to have an additional water resistant, chemical- and fragrance-free facial sunscreen. It can be applied directly over your makeup, acting as a simple touch up to hide imperfections. It’s important to note—water resistant does not mean waterproof. Any sunscreen, no matter the quality, will be shed or metabolized by the body in 90 minutes. Reapplication throughout the day is key!
Not only does Alastin Restorative Skin Complex clear the extracellular matrix to help your skin’s cells communicate better, it also stimulates collagen and elastin production, protects and grows adipose fat cells, controls inflammation, reduces oxidative stress and upregulates the growth factors that become depleted as you age. The combination of ingredients volumize and lift aging skin, combating all visible signs of aging for the face, neck and décolleté.
The 30% formula in Vitamin C Lotion 30% contains one of the strongest concentrations of Vitamin C available and provides a full line-up of antioxidants, including Vitamin E and Coenzyme Q10. I apply this every morning after I wash my face and the results are remarkable! Ever since I starting using the product, I’ve seen a noticeable difference in the overall appearance of my face – lines and wrinkles are less noticeable, and I have a fresh, glowing look every day!
Sunscreen that doubles as a foundation? Yes, please! Alastin’s HydraTint Pro Mineral Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 36 is a lightweight, all physical, broad-spectrum sunscreen that provides daily protection from damaging UVA/UVB rays. The formulation is rich in antioxidants that shield against pollution-induced damage and ingredients that improve skin hydration, and has a natural hint of color that is compatible with all skin types. It also pairs nicely with Colorescience Sunforgettable Sunscreen.
Usually the first visible signs of aging are fine lines and wrinkles underneath the eye, which can result from sun exposure. Medical-grade eye creams work by harnessing the power of peptides. Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the building blocks of protein, and are able to penetrate the dermal-epidermal junction in the skin and send signals to cells letting them know what to do. Revision D·E·J eye cream™ has peptides that tell skin cells to increase moisture production and stimulate collagen growth, which keeps the skin from showing signs of aging and sun damage.
Wearing sunscreen daily is your best weapon against aging, so why not combine it with a high-quality moisturizer to save both time and money? EltaMD UV Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 30+ is a combination sunscreen/moisturizer, and can help hydrate the skin while protecting it from sun damage. More importantly, it’s easy to apply, so it integrates perfectly into your daily skin care regimen.
