The Art of Injection

By Warren B. Seiler III MD

I have been treating patients and their skin concerns for years, and it’s quite extraordinary to see how every person’s face and neck anatomy vastly differs. Yes, this probably seems obvious, but you’d be surprised how many physicians do not take this into consideration when meeting with and treating patients with injectables! I have also learned that, though patients sometimes think they know what they want, after a thorough consultation and gaining a better understanding of their concerns and goals, we might land on a solution that never even entered their mind.

Yes, I have been a practicing cosmetic laser surgeon for quite some time and though my practice has evolved, my overall philosophy has always and will always remain the same –  there is no-one-size-fits all solution. I develop treatment plans specifically catered to my patients’ individual needs and concerns, established during a thorough consultation, typically lasting one to two hours. I believe cosmetic injection is an art form, and practitioners must understand both the tools and canvas they are working with to achieve the best results.

In recent years, cosmetic injectables have seen a significant increase in popularity, and there are more options available than ever! At my practice alone, we offer a variety of injectables, each carefully researched and selected with our patients’ best interests in mind. Our treatments can be used to treat a variety of concerns, ranging from correcting fine lines, wrinkles and age-related volume loss, to permanently removing submental fat (double chin). Though we have all of these options, it certainly does not mean that they are applicable for every patient. This is where the one-on-one consultation plays an essential role.

An expert injector, such as myself, must also look at the face/neck as a whole and evaluate many aspects before simply injecting a product into an area. Some injectors may take a very standardized approach with Botox and fillers, simply injecting the same areas with the same amount in every patient. An experienced and specialized injector will individualize these treatments to what each different patient needs and can achieve, depending on their specific anatomy. In fact, I regularly train other practitioners from around the world on advanced injection techniques through my private training company, Seiler Skin Aesthetic Institute.

During a consultation, the patient and I establish what their best path forward is and so I can determine what injectable will best meet their needs – whether it be Botox Cosmetic, fillers any of our other offerings. I take a conservative but effective approach, and meticulously evaluate their facial anatomy and aesthetic proportions to ensure they achieve natural, beautiful and desired results.

From knowing which filler is appropriate, to the depth of injection to volume / lifting versus tissue expansion, I cannot stress enough the importance of taking an individualized approach. The techniques I have established over years of performing injectable treatments allow patients to look naturally more youthful without pain, downtime or bruising! If you have had an unpleasant experience before with some of these procedures, you might be surprised to learn that injections don’t have to hurt or leave you questionable results. In the right hands, injectables can be very beneficial, safe, painless and effective!

Remember – injection is an art form, and there is not a one-size-fits-all approach that allows a practitioner to inject each patient the same way. Our extensive consultation process will help us decide what treatments are right for you. These steps ensure optimal results and, ultimately, a very satisfied patient!
