The Benefits of Adding PRP to Filler

By Warren B. Seiler III MD

We offer a variety of services here at Seiler Skin, from injections to laser treatments and everything in between. I am constantly researching the latest advances within the aesthetic and cosmetic industries to ensure we continually provide the best treatments that will meet all of your skin health needs. If there’s a proven, best-in-class treatment that can improve the lives of our patients, you can bet we either already offer it or are strongly considering bringing it to our practice!

One such treatment is filler combined with platelet rich plasma, better known as PRP. This procedure combines my expert understanding of filler injections with the innovative science behind PRP to deliver enhanced results. There’s always an opportunity to learn about new treatments that could improve your skin health, so I wanted to take a few minutes to explain how this cutting-edge treatment works and why you may want to consider adding PRP to your next filler appointment.

You’ve likely heard a lot from me about filler injections over the years, but a quick refresher never hurts. Filler is an injectable treatment that addresses “static” issues caused by age-related volume loss. This treatment commonly is used to treat areas of the face such as the cheeks, lips and under-eyes, but also can be used on the hands to give them a more youthful appearance. If there’s one thing I know for certain, it’s how to deliver incredible results with filler! Through years of training and hands-on experience, I have mastered the “art of injection” and know how to achieve noticeable, natural results through my conservative yet effective and safe approach.

While filler is one of the most common treatments in our industry, platelet rich plasma is a fairly new advancement so it is less well-known. PRP is a concentrated source of platelets, growth factors and cytokines produced naturally in your own body that stimulate and control healthy regenerative processes. These include collagen development and soft tissue remodeling – two key factors that create fuller and more youthful looking skin. Both of these processes slow down as we age, which can lead to noticeable volume loss. PRP helps kickstart collagen and soft tissue growth in order to plump up the skin and counteract the visible signs of aging.

Now that we’ve covered our bases, let’s jump into the good stuff! Here’s how it works: first, I consult with each patient to assess their face and/or hands and determine the best course of treatment. We then withdraw a small amount of blood (similar to any blood draw you’ve previously experienced at a doctor’s office) and spin it in a FDA-approved centrifuge in order to separate the plasma and obtain the concentrated PRP needed for treatment. After the PRP has been isolated, I administer separate injections of both filler and PRP to the treated area.

The true benefit behind the combination of these two treatments is the longevity and level of results. Filler provides your skin with a restored fullness in areas that have lost volume over time. The addition of PRP helps sustain those results by jumpstarting your body’s own natural regenerative processes. PRP also treats skin issues that filler alone cannot, such as fine lines, acne and uneven texture. These two treatments on their own work incredibly well, but in conjunction are able to deliver better, longer-lasting results.

No matter if you’ve been a Seiler Skin patient for years or have yet to stop by our office, there always are new treatments to explore. Patients who have added PRP to their typical filler treatments have shared with us just how big of a difference it makes in the results they experience. The combination of these two procedures truly elevates volume restoration in the face and/or hands and helps achieve a more youthful appearance that will make any person happy.
