Investing in Your Skin Health During Yours 20s & 30s

By Kala Spivey

I’ve always enjoyed celebrating my birthday with close family members and friends, and this year for my 30th it won’t be any different! Birthdays are a time to reflect on the things that matter the most in life and look forward to what’s ahead. While many people may dread turning the big 3-0, I couldn’t be more excited, especially since I know I’ve taken the steps needed to keep my skin healthy and youthful-looking for many more years to come!

People commonly think that skin health is something you don’t have to invest in until your 40s and 50s, but this simply isn’t true. Just as you take care of yourself by exercising and eating healthy, you have to do the exact same with your skin. I’m always sharing with patients and friends the importance of finding the right skincare regimen for their needs, so I thought I’d celebrate my birthday by discussing why and how you can take care of your skin at any age!

One of the most common things I hear from people in their 20s and 30s is that they’re too young to need a full skincare regimen. Their over-the-counter face wash and occasional sunscreen usage seems to be working fine for now, so why change things up? It’s important to understand that just because your skin is healthy today doesn’t mean it will be later down the road. Proper skincare is about being proactive, not reactive. It’s much easier to prevent issues such as fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation now rather than try to address them later in life when our skin can’t heal as quickly as it does during our youth.

Patients in their 20s/30s also tend to believe that skincare is expensive and out of their price range. At Seiler Skin, we take the time to develop a regimen that’s right for both your skin and your budget. Dr. Seiler provides every patient with a thorough, one-on-one consultation to assess their concerns and recommend specific products/treatments. We also make suggestions on how your daily lifestyle habits could influence your skin health, from the amount of time spent in front of blue-light devices to the foods and drinks that affect your complexion.

Now, you may be wondering – which products and treatments do people in their 20s and 30s typically need? While each person’s skin is unique, there are a few staple products we recommend:

  • Medical-grade sunscreen – No regimen is complete without sunscreen. Your skin is exposed to UVA/UVB rays year-round, even during the fall and winter months.
  • Cleanser – The right cleanser can help maintain your pore size and prevent them from expanding as you age. It’s also a great way to both start and end your day on the right note.
  • Eye cream – The skin around our eyes is super thin and prone to aging. The proper eye cream can make a world of difference later in life.

There are also a number of preventative treatments you can opt for in yours 20s/30s. Botox can treat the fine lines and wrinkles that tend to develop around the eyes and on the forehead while filler is ideal for addressing age-related volume loss in the cheeks or lips. HydraFacials are another treatment we recommend – and that I personally love – for exfoliating the skin and ridding it of any impurities. We can also help minimize pore size and even skin texture with Vampire Facials, which use platelet rich plasma (PRP) and medical microneedling to kickstart the body’s natural development of collagen and elastin.

Your birthday should always be worth celebrating no matter how old you’re turning. I’m looking forward to my 30s knowing that I’ve taken care of my skin health and can expect to look and feel as good as I have in my 20s for many more years to come. If you want to stay your best self regardless of your age, invest in your skincare from an early start!
