Skin Wellness Tips for Before, During and After Pregnancy

By Katie Pilkerton

Pregnancy is a part of one’s life full of joy, happiness – and sometimes a bit of morning sickness! While it’s easy to celebrate new beginnings, it’s important to recognize the impact pregnancy has on a person both mentally and physically. We hear about all the doctor’s visits, prenatal vitamins and baby-friendly diets, but what about skin wellness? Your skin health should be a priority no matter what stage of life you’re in to ensure you both look and feel your best. As a mother of two (and soon to be three), I thought I’d share some tips on how moms-to-be can maintain their skin health before, during and after pregnancy and the ways our team at Seiler Skin can help!

The first thing to keep in mind is that every pregnancy is different. Some of the more common skin conditions women may experience while pregnant include an increase in acne or the appearance of melasma, or brown discoloration on different areas of the body. These changes are commonly the result of hormone level changes and may occur at any point during pregnancy. You should also remember that symptoms not only vary from person to person, but also from child to child. I didn’t experience any changes in my skin during my first two pregnancies, but with my third I’ve noticed a greater amount of melasma. A thorough consultation with our team is a sure way to assess your skin health concerns and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

Another thing to consider when pregnant is what changes to make to your current regimen. While some products containing certain ingredients may not be recommended during pregnancy, there are still plenty of other medical-grade options safe for both you and baby. Below are just a few of the products we recommend incorporating into a routine:

  • Skinceuticals Discoloration Defense – perfect for addressing discoloration, pigmentation and redness in the skin.
  • Phyto Corrective Gel – this gel helps calm sensitive or inflamed skin and treats potential breakouts.
  • Revision Hydrating Serum – helps control oil production in the skin caused by changes in hormone levels.
  • Alastin TransFORM Body Treatment – this cream nourishes and hydrates to help minimize stretchmarks during and after pregnancy.
  • Revox 7 – for Botox users, this is a great alternative to use while pregnant to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Patients also ask us if they’re still able to receive treatments during pregnancy. Many of the services we offer such as Botox, filler, laser treatment and PRP injections are not recommended while pregnant but can be resumed post-pregnancy depending on a doctor’s recommendations and whether or not you breastfeed. We suggest women come in for customized facials and dermaplane treatment while pregnant to keep a clearer complexion and hydrate the skin. There’s nothing better than that pregnancy glow, but everyone can always do for an added skincare boost!

As with any other aspect of pregnancy, you should always consult an expert with questions or concerns you may have – and that’s where our team comes in! We offer a thorough one-on-one consultation process with every patient to determine the causes of their concerns and develop a treatment plan designed specifically for them. No matter if you’re a mother of multiples or planning for the future, call us today to learn how Seiler Skin can be your trusted skin health partner!
