What makes Botox safe to use?

By Warren B. Seiler III MD

I have been performing Botox treatments for ten years and at the time of the writing of this blog, I have performed over 20,000 Botox treatments. I routinely treat myself, my wife, my staff, friends, and family in addition to many patients. It has been FDA approved for cosmetic use for over 12 years but has been approved for over 20 for other medical reasons. Besides being safely injected by me being an expert injector, Botox is very safe for the following reasons.

There are three main reasons that Botox is safe from a medical/scientific standpoint:

  1. Botox is not the true toxic form of Botulism. Botox is actually a purified protein form that allows for muscle relaxation but is not the true toxin. It is produced in a FDA approved lab and the chemical process stops at the level of the pure protein form.
  2. Botox is injected into the muscle and not the bloodstream. Therefore it is not systemically absorbed.
  3. Botulism requires the systemic absorption of over 3000 units of the actual toxin to have an effect. Even though Botox is not that toxin, I only use an average of 20-50 units of purified Botox per patient.

So, the bottom line is that Botox is not the true toxin that causes disease, it’s not injected into the bloodstream, and one only uses a tiny amount of purified Botox.

I have tried other competitors like Dysport and Xeomin and they don’t touch Botox in result, longevity, cost, and natural result. Botox is a great treatment and I love being able to offer it to my patients.
