How to Revitalize Your Skin after Summer

By Warren B. Seiler III MD

I use a lot of analogies and comparisons when it comes to proper skincare because sometimes it’s the only way to convey its importance. For instance, if I told you right now that I was going to run a marathon in December, I wouldn’t dream of waiting until December to begin training. Honestly, I’d be kicking myself for not having started earlier this summer. The same concept applies to achieving your ideal skin complexion – if you have a major life event approaching (e.g., a wedding, gala, etc.), want to look nice for the upcoming holidays or a vacation, or just want to revitalize your skin after years of damage, do not wait to make changes because great results take time to achieve!

I see patients of all age ranges – from their teens to their 80’s – who come in to see me for a fresh start, particularly after the summer months. It’s remarkable how months of sun exposure, perspiration and general neglect of a daily skincare regimen can harm your skin. My team and I work closely with every patient to design a customized treatment plan (which includes medical-grade skincare products) that addresses his or her particular needs. While each patient’s skin care treatment plan is unique, there are a number of great products and treatments I usually recommend to address problems that arise during the hottest months of the year. Below, I share several of these and a realistic timeline to revitalize your skin after summer.

Step 1: Consultation
Right NOW

The process begins with a comprehensive consultation with myself and one of my aestheticians or cosmetic consultants, where we’ll will spend around 45-60 minutes with you one-on-one to obtain a thorough and accurate medical history. This methodology helps us get to know you better and learn about your concerns, and then decide what treatment options are right for you.

Step 2: Medical-grade Skincare Product Regimen
Early September

The road to skin redemption begins with a customized skincare regimen, which is essential to achieving your overall skin health goals. For those battling conditions like discolored, mottled and hyperpigmented skin, I typically recommend a combination of medical-grade skincare products, including The Perfect Bleaching Cream, Alastin Restorative Skin Complex and a retinol, like Revision Retinol Complete and a medical-grade sunscreen which contains zinc. Although these products have similarities and help to brighten skin tones, they each target different areas of concern, including discoloration, restoration of volume and elasticity and combating skin dryness. We’ll help guide your toward the right products for your specific concerns.

Step 3: HydraFacial Series
Begin: Mid-September; End: Early October

Once a skincare regimen is identified, I would then have the patient come back a week or two later for a HydraFacial, a gentle, non-invasive treatment that both soothes, exfoliates, and moisturizes to produce remarkably clearer, glowing skin. I think of the HydraFacial as a good “clean-up” treatment that improves the overall appearance of skin, and it can be performed on the face, neck, chest, back and hands. Its gentle power is derived through a superior delivery system, with key performing ingredients that help protect against environmental damage, and plump and firm the skin for lasting results that can be seen and felt instantly. We recommend that patients come every two to three weeks for optimal results.

Step 4: Botox
Begin: Late September

Believe it or not, you are never too young or old to start the fight against the aging process, and this is why Botox is hands-down the most popular treatment in the cosmetic world. It works by relaxing muscle movement, reducing the frequency and severity of line and wrinkle formation in the skin. I understand you might be concerned that you’ll look unnatural or like you’ve had “work done” after receiving a Botox treatment (“frozen face,” “surprised look,” “weird eyebrows,” “droopy eyelids,” etc.). I assure you, none of these scenarios will be the case after receiving Botox from an expert injector, like myself. I have trained extensively in complex injection techniques and anatomical evaluation of facial features and proportions, which empowers me to deliver beautiful, natural results. Botox fits perfectly into almost everyone’s post-summer skin revitalization plan.

Step 5: Vampire Facial Series
Begin: Early October; End: Early November

A few weeks after the patient’s initial HydraFacial, we then would move on to a series of Vampire Facials. The Vampire Facial has risen in popularity of the past few years for two main reasons. First, it transforms the skin and creates a vibrant, glowing and youthful look with minimal downtime required. Second, the procedure has incredible non-traditional applications in the treatment of scars, including acne scars, stretch marks and scar contractures from wound-healing processes. The secret ingredient to the Vampire Facial’s® healing power lies in the extraction and separation of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) from the patient’s blood. PRP is a concentrated source of platelets, growth factors and cytokines that occur naturally in the body, and are key factors in the healthy regenerative processes occurring constantly in your cells. During this painless procedure, the PRP is applied topically and drives its amazing results.

Not only am I a certified provider of the Vampire® procedures, but I’m also one of the few expert trainers in the world who teach other physicians and practitioners how to perform these treatments on behalf of their inventor, Dr. Charles Runels. I know first-hand how powerful, safe and effective the Vampire Facial® can be for people of all skin types.

Step 6: Fraxel Restore Dual
Mid-November

After a series of Vampire Facials, your skin should be in a rejuvenated stage, with fantastic results clearly visible. Fraxel Dual Restore (Fraxel) is a catch-all procedure – it requires little downtime, is affordable, evens out fine lines and wrinkles and helps with the overall texture of skin. It’s the gold standard for non-ablative (non-skin removing) skin resurfacing. As I mentioned, Fraxel is a minimal downtime procedure, meaning if you come for the procedure right before Thanksgiving, your skin will be at the ideal state – just in time for the holiday season.

Although this general plan will be beneficial to nearly everyone, the amount of time it takes to reverse years of damage, especially from the sun, is totally dependent on a patient’s skin type. Some older patients may require a more rigorous treatment plan with stronger treatments. One thing I always stress to patients is to not get caught up in the, “I have to do all of this to see results” mentality – particularly if you’ve never had any cosmetic procedures before. We will work closely with you to identify a treatment plan with which you are pleased, and fits your budget.

That said, I assure you that amazing improvements can be made in as little as three months, and much of it comes down to the patient’s commitment. If you stick to your daily skincare regimen and are dedicated to getting the recommended treatments, you will achieve your desired results.
