Jill’s Flipping the Script on New Year’s Resolutions – Are You In?
Do you find yourself making the same New Year’s resolution every year, only to fall right back into old habits by February? I’ve never been a huge fan of New Year’s resolutions and instead believe in practicing healthy habits year-round. Whether it’s losing weight or finding a new career, taking on your goals day by day and incorporating better habits into your regular routine are the key to making the most of your year.
As skin care experts, our team members are trained and educated in how to help patients find the right treatments, products and habits to make them look and feel their best. We work to find the regimen that not only fits a person’s unique skin needs, but also their regular lives. Taking control of your skin health shouldn’t be an intimidating prospect, so I want to share five ways anyone – and yes, I mean anyone – can achieve healthy, happy skin in the new year.
FOLLOW A DAILY SKIN CARE REGIMEN
This one is listed first because it is, by far, the most important recommendation in this blog! It’s critical that you develop and follow a daily skin care regimen to boost your skin’s performance and overall health. Think of it like exercise – you can’t just go to the gym every day for one month and stay in shape for the remainder of the year (if only though, right?). Similarly, you must pay consistent attention to and care for your skin to achieve and maintain optimal results. You should also create a regimen that fits your schedule and is easy to stick to every day. If you struggle like I have, particularly in the evenings after a long day, try beginning your nighttime routine as soon as you get home. It’s easier to just get it out of the way and spend the rest of the night relaxing!
EAT THE RIGHT STUFF
The old saying, “you are what you eat” couldn’t be more accurate when it comes to your skin health! I could list out a hundred examples of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich foods to integrate into your diet, but it’s really more about making smart decisions most of the time. Try cooking more often at home rather than going out to eat so you have more control over what goes into your food. Dr. Seiler and I make dinner most nights of the week and prepare our lunch at the office each day to help cut down on how often we eat out. If you want to splurge a little, pick a day on the weekend to eat whatever you want – life is short, after all!
EXERCISE AT LEAST THREE OR MORE TIMES A WEEK
Virtually every scientific study on the subject shows that exercise plays a significant role in helping to keep your skin looking younger – in fact, it even has been shown to reverse the visible signs of aging. For me, finding an exercise routine that I loved and didn’t feel like a chore was the only way to maintain consistency. I love circuit training and weight lifting because I can put on my headphones and get lost in the moment with my favorite music. If you’re having trouble holding yourself accountable, consider finding a personal trainer who can customize a routine specifically for your body type and goals. The gym plays an important role in maintaining younger-looking skin – plus who doesn’t love that post-workout glow?
CHANGE YOUR REGIMEN SEASONALLY
As seasons change, your skin reacts to the changing temperatures, humidity and countless other factors. For example, during fall and winter, your skin can severely dry out and become “scaly” in texture. There are numerous things you can do to combat seasonal skincare challenges, the most important of which is to flip the script on your regimen! Products that are effective during the summer months can have adverse effects during the winter.
