How PRP Can Treat Hair Loss

By Warren B. Seiler III MD

We’ve talked a lot about the transformative power of platelet rich plasma (PRP) and our selection of Vampire treatments. Whether it’s restoring fullness to the face, diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles or enhancing your sexual health with the P-Shot, we’re able to jumpstart the body’s natural processes to improve collagen and soft tissue remodeling and leave you looking and feeling your best. One use of PRP that isn’t as well known is its ability to treat slight hair loss and thinning, as well help prevent future hair loss. As both a provider of this treatment and someone who has experienced it firsthand, I wanted to take some time to share who’s an ideal candidate for this procedure and some of the science behind it.

The first thing to understand is that hair loss can happen for a variety of reasons. In fact, it’s one of the most commonly treated concerns across the aesthetic industry, and there are a multitude of ways to address it. Options include everything from hair transplants, over-the-counter and medical-grade products, hormone treatment, low-level laser and so much more. Different solutions work for different people, so it’s worth exploring different options based on your specific needs and the type of hair loss you’re experiencing.

PRP is best suited for people experiencing slight hair loss or thinning over time. This treatment is especially helpful in addressing hair changes induced by stress, hormones or even postpartum. It’s important to note that PRP is unlikely to help patients who may have more significant balding. As an aesthetic expert and provider, I always want patients to have clear expectations and develop a treatment plan that will meet their needs. It’s why we make sure to pre-screen every potential patient before scheduling an in-person consultation by assessing their concerns via photos or a video call to determine the extent of their hair damage/loss. If I don’t think PRP is the right fit, I can refer you to several trusted hair transplant specialists in town.

Our process for treating the hair with PRP is similar to the other ways we use this science in our other Vampire  treatments. We start by drawing a small amount of your blood that’s then placed in a centrifuge to separate out the cytokines, platelets and growth factors that make up the solution. Unlike other Vampire treatments that rely on microneedling, for the hair we instead inject PRP directly into the scalp. The overall treatment takes around just ten minutes and patients tend to experience minimal discomfort. You might notice your scalp feeling “tight” in the days following treatment, but this passes quickly and shouldn’t prevent you from carrying on your usual routine.

I know how effective this treatment can be – not just from years of research and treating patients, but also from benefiting from it myself. I’ve always had pretty thick and healthy hair, but in recent years noticed slight thinning in the front along my hairline. After five treatments over the last few years, I can tell a difference in just a matter of months. PRP doesn’t create new follicles, but gives existing ones a boost to restore hair to a fuller, longer length. I’m always raving to patients about how much of a difference it made for me and can’t speak highly enough of this treatment!
